The ability to courageously speak up and share thoughts and different perspectives is paramount to building strong relationships, fostering successful collaborations, and creating innovative ideas. As these are three crucial aspects of Edge of Amazing, we’re thrilled to announce our 2019 Keynote: Michelle Buck, Clinical Professor of Leadership at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and her presentation “Brave Voices: Courageous Conversations with the Power to Transform a Community.”

Snohomish County is lucky to have so many committed and passionate individuals driven by the determination to transform the health and well-being of our communities. We believe strongly in working together – collaborations are at the core of our most effective work. What if we could do more to make these collaborations stronger and more effective?

In this session, Professor Buck suggests that in order to generate thriving community well-being, individuals must have the confidence and capacity to initiate and navigate courageous conversations about the issues that matter most. We must be able to bring together diverse stakeholders who often share common interests but may hold different perspectives and even conflicting preferences.

Thriving teams and communities depend on individuals to speak up about innovative ideas as well as challenges or concerns. When people feel their opinion counts, they are more engaged, creative and productive. However, people often have legitimate incentives to remain silent, because they may not feel safe, confident or capable of speaking up about the most significant issues they face. This leads to decreased trust and morale and inhibits progress on key priorities.

Attendees will hear this prominent Social Psychologist speak to the research-based methodologies and key strategies around creating an environment that overcomes obstacles and encourages courageous conversations, enabling collaboration to flourish, innovation to thrive and conflicts to transform into creative possibilities. When all individuals have the ability to contribute and be heard within a group, trust increases, connection deepens, and relationships bloom. This, in turn, unleashes the true potential of an entire community to address the issues that matter most and to maximize collective well-being.

Michelle L. Buck is Clinical Professor of Leadership at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. She previously served as the School’s first Director of Leadership Initiatives, designing and coordinating opportunities for personal leadership development to complement the School’s academic curriculum.

For over 25 years, Professor Buck has been passionate about bringing people together and expanding possibility by teaching Leadership and also negotiations, focusing on how people creatively transform differences into opportunities. She taught “The Soul of Leadership” with Dr. Deepak Chopra in Kellogg Executive Education from 2003 to 2017, and teaches in Kellogg’s Advanced Management Program, the Senior Women’s Leadership Program, and Leading Family Enterprises Program.  She has worked globally with individuals and organizaitons in the private, public and non-profit sectors. Her work has been profiled in Brené Brown’s best-selling book, Braving the Wilderness.

Professor Buck has a PhD in Social Psychology from Princeton University, and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Michigan. Professor Buck’s commitment in all of her work is to inspire and empower others to unleash new possibilities for themselves, for others and the communities in which they find themselves.
